BASKETBALL Victoria has announced the Victorian 2021 Under-20 and Ivor Burge teams, selected to represent the state at the next Australian Junior Championships.<\/span><\/p>\n

The six teams will make their way to Mackay, Queensland in May for the Australian Under-20 Junior Championships and Ivor Burge Championships for athletes with an intellectual disability. <\/span><\/p>\n

Victoria Under-20 Navy Blue Men<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

The Victoria Under-20 Navy Blue Men\u2019s team features national champions Harry Johnson<\/strong> and Mason Perry<\/strong>, and former Victorian representative Christian D\u2019Angelo<\/strong>. The side is set to be coached by Basketball Victoria High Performance Head Coach (Metropolitan Men) Ash Arnott<\/em><\/strong>, and will be assisted by Nathan Cooper-Brown<\/em><\/strong>, Zach Moult<\/em><\/strong> and Neil Mottram<\/em><\/strong>. <\/span><\/p>\n

The Victoria Under-20 Navy Blue Women\u2019s team will be coached by Australian Opals legend Jenni Screen<\/em><\/strong>, who is currently working as Basketball Victoria\u2019s High Performance head coach (Metropolitan Women). She will be working alongside former national championship winning head coach Zoe Carr<\/strong><\/em>, Jo Wood<\/strong><\/em> and Kerryn O\u2019Donnell<\/strong><\/em>. An on-court leader to look out for is VNPP athlete Jasmine Whately<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Victoria Ivor Burge Men<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

The Victoria Ivor Burge Men\u2019s team is looking to return to the top of the podium with a few familiar faces. Returning to the 2021 lineup are experienced mainstays Jake De La Motte<\/strong>, James Myers<\/strong> and Frazer Dawber<\/strong>. The only two new additions to the team are rising stars Jack Inella<\/strong> and Matthew Farrar<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Head coach Ryan Holloway<\/strong> is keen see the team play at the Championships.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThese championships mean everything to this team – they\u2019re passionate and excited to be able to represent Victoria on the national stage,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s going to be another tough year of competition with the Ivor Burge competition, but as a team we’ll be ready to hit the floor running.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Victoria Ivor Burge Women <\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

Unfortunately due to a lack of competing teams from other states, the 2021 Ivor Burge Women\u2019s tournament will not go ahead. The side that won the 2020 Ivor Burge Women\u2019s title in Canberra were reselected in the 2021 lineup. <\/span><\/p>\n

Head coach Simon Robinson<\/em> said despite these challenges, the program will try to put on alternative events to keep athletes involved and interested. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI know a lot of the athletes well, know the families well – I do feel a big sense of obligation and duty to provide as many opportunities as we can [to] make it the best experience that we can,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ll definitely be trying to give opportunities to the athletes to keep them engaged and get back to some sense of normalcy and 2022 will hopefully be like what it was in 2020.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The Victoria Under-20 Women\u2019s team features a number of junior talent, including WNBL athletes Gemma Potter<\/strong> and Jade Melbourne<\/strong>, as well as current Centre of Excellence athletes Charlise Dunn<\/strong>, Emily Sewell<\/strong> and Olivia Pollard<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Head coach Katrina Hibbert<\/strong><\/em> says the group\u2019s versatility mixed with elite level experience is a recipe for success.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThis team has the ability to play several different line-ups with the group we have selected – we can play big and dominate the paint and we can play with a smaller line-up with versatility through all positions to stretch oppositions and be aggressive and disruptive defensively,\u201d she says.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m looking forward to working with a talented group pf female athletes in a challenging tournament environment against the other top female players of their age group in Australia.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Featuring Australian Boomers tandem Dyson Daniel<\/strong> and Patrick Ryan<\/strong>, NBA Global Academy representative Bol Dengdit<\/strong> and former Victorian representatives Brody Nunn<\/strong>, Josh Duach<\/strong>, Joe Moli<\/strong>, Keith Robinson<\/strong>, Riley Simmons<\/strong> and Owen Foxwell<\/strong>, this team is shaping up for success. <\/span><\/p>\n

Head coach Matthew Nunn<\/em><\/strong> says the groups spark and intensity will make for some exciting baseball to watch.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI think we have a very versatile and balanced team that will have very strong guard play at both ends,\u201d he says.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI think it is a great outcome for the Under-20 age group to participate at the championships this year, as it is a critical pathway for many young athletes to launch their future goals within the sport.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
