Wragg’s winner delivers last-second points
THE Sunbury Jets have snuck home to a thrilling triumph against Wyndham in the Big V Men’s competition on the weekend. In a contest that truly went down to the wire, it was looking likely that Wyndham was going to just make it over the line with a tense win. However, the home side was able to conjure a miraculous last second three from the hands of Jeremy Wragg, who was able to overcome a poor shooting night to produce a match-winning bucket and lead the Jets to a cracking win.
The result sees Wyndham sustain its first loss of the season, bringing it back to a level playing field. While from a Sunbury point of view, the win has seen the Jets hit a level record with Wyndham, trailing top spot by just percentage. With the season approaching the halfway point, the upset from Sunbury has changed the way the competition looks moving forward.
Sunbury Jets (93) def. Wyndham (92)
The Jets got off to a flyer in the first term, producing an outstanding offensive showing in the opening period. They poured in a whopping 32 points on the back of star Ishmael Sanders, who was his usual damaging self. While Wyndham was still pretty strong at scoring the basketball, it was unable to keep up with the opposition and trailed by eight at the first break. However, the second term completely belonged to the visitors, as they shut down their opponents on the defensive end and maintained their offensive output. Suddenly, Sunbury’s eight-point lead had been turned into a eight-point deficit, and all of the momentum was on Wyndham’s side.
The Jets were able to bounce back in the third term, regaining some of the offensive power that served them well in the opening term. They began to chip away at the lead behind some consistent scoring, and gave themselves a real chance heading into the final quarter of play. Sunbury was able to erase the margin just two minutes into the final quarter, and what followed was a see-sawing affair. Each side had some pretty big buckets, and it looked like the game could go either way. Maurice Howard put Wyndham up by three with less than a minute remaining, but Sanders answered from the free throw line to tie up proceedings with just 13 seconds remaining. The visitors regained the lead in the dying seconds thanks to a jump shot from Mabel Ayol, but the game was not done yet. Wragg managed to create some space with the last shot of the game, which found the bottom of the net. It was an appropriate way to finish a cracking contest, with the Jets claiming one of the best wins of the 2022 season.
Wragg was obviously the hero for Sunbury, but there were plenty of contributors in the win. Sanders was simply outstanding, continuing the dominance of his 2022 campaign to finish with another powerful showing of 33 points. Not far behind him was teammate Maxwell Barkeley who had 28 points of his own, while fellow Jet Trevon Clayton had a double-double with 18 points and 12 rebounds. Ayol was the strongest performer for Wyndham with 28 points.
