Wyndham and McKinnon looking to keep up with top spot

TWO of the top three sides in the Big V Women’s championship are set to go head to head in the fixture for Round 10 on the weekend. Wyndham and McKinnon have performed pretty evenly to start 2022, both securing a spot towards the top of the standings, but will face a big test when they face off at Eagle Stadium on Saturday night.

Both sides seem to have found the winning formula, with positive records after nine rounds of play. Wyndham have been just a bit better in their outings, but it should matter not in the matchup, with McKinnon likely to bring just as much heat. While there will be no immediate impact on the standings, there are still plenty of implications. A win to Wyndham will see the gap to first placed closed if certain results occur, while on the other hand, McKinnon will be eager to get the ‘W’ as it will keep them in touch with second and first place. Either way, expect both sides to come out firing and pretty keen on leaving Eagle Stadium with a victory.

Wyndham has not done much wrong to start its 2022 campaign, sustaining just two losses from its first 10 outings and cementing second spot after nine rounds. Only Bulleen is ahead, but a win here would go a long way in closing in on top spot if the Boomers were to be on the receiving end of an upset. All the home side can do is control their own fate, and that means taking down a formidable McKinnon side.

Wyndham’s strength in its wins has been the ability to break away (often in the second half) and put some distance on the scoreboard. In fact, they handed the Boomers their first loss of the year last round, so they should enter the game with a fair bit of momentum and belief. Life will be made easier too if Dyani Ananiev can back up her 27-point, 11-rebound showing from that game.

McKinnon has been quite good to start the year, winning six of its first 10 games. The visitors sit in third spot on the ladder, but with a couple of sides hot on their tale, that position is far from secure, emphasising how crucial a win here would be. Wyndham is a couple of wins ahead on the ladder, but letting that figure stretch out to three, then it would make life a fair bit tougher.

The visiting side will have its hands full in slowing down a Wyndham offence that could erupt at any side, but if they can control the wave of points that has defeated many other sides, then they could be in with a real shot. Expect Morgan Ili to be right amonGst the action on Saturday night, as she has been a real spark for the side in all 10 games.
