Young gun spotlight: NBL – Round 1

NBL young guns, Tohi Smith-Milner, Reuben Te Rangi, Melo Trimble and Harry Froling all got their seasons off to a good start in the opening round. We took a look at their performances over the weekend.

Cairns Taipans- #1 Melo Trimble

Melo Trimble was not only the star of the young guns, but he was the star of the opening round. Trimble scored 32 points in his 32 minutes of game time against Brisbane. He shot 61 per cent from the field and made six from seven shots inside the arc. He also pulled down five rebounds in the win.

Adelaide 36ers- #11 Harry Froling

Harry Froling made an immediate impact in his nine minutes, scoring five points. He sunk his only three-point attempt to go along with his one basket inside the paint. In his six minutes against the Wildcats, Froling scored four points. He only missed one field goal attempt and also pulled down two rebounds.

Melbourne United- #14 Tohi Smith-Milner

With only 11 minutes of game time against New Zealand, Smith-Milner managed to score seven points. Amazingly, all these points came from free throws, going to the line five times. This gave him a 70 per cent shooting accuracy from the free throw line to go along with his two rebounds. He had a disappointing game against Illawarra though, only scoring one point, again from the free throw line.

Sydney Kings- #20 Brian Bowen

Bowen made the most of his 17 minutes on court, sinking 13 points in the Kings’ loss against Adelaide. He converted three of his six shots inside the arc and sunk two three-pointers from two attempts to go along with it.

Brisbane Bullets- #25 Reuben Te Rangi

Te Rangi starred in Brisbane’s opening game, scoring 18 points. He shot 50 per cent from the field, sinking six baskets from 12 attempted shots. He also sunk three three-pointers from seven attempts and grabbed three rebounds in his 23 minutes of game time. Against the Breakers, he suffered in his 17 minutes, only sinking four points.
