Young gun spotlight- WNBL- Round 4
THIS week’s young gun spotlight features players from five different teams. Guards, Lindsay Allen and Brittany McPhee continue to impress for their sides, and are again recognised in this week’s edition. Townsville’s Mikaela Donnelly, Bendigo’s Abbey Wehrung and Sydney’s Vanessa Panousis all stepped up to the plate as well in Round 4.
#5 Vanessa Panousis- Sydney Uni Flames
After a three-point game against the Lynx, Panousis found herself in the second game of the round. Against the Capitals, she thrived with 13 points, two rebounds and one assist. She also hit all areas of the stat sheet in the first game of the round, racking up four rebounds and two assists.
#6 Mikhaela Donnelly- Townsville Fire
Donnelly made a handy contribution against Perth, scoring the third highest points in her team. She ended with nine points, six rebounds and four assists in a solid all-round game. Donnelly was also one of four players to spend over 30 minutes on the court for Townsville, ending with 34 minutes.
#13 Abbey Wehrung- Bendigo Spirit
Abbey Wehrung found some valuable court time against Adelaide, with 31 minutes. From her time, she scored a handy 10 points to go with her three rebounds and one assist. She struggled against Melbourne though, with two points to go with her one rebound and one assist in the tight tussle.
#15 Lindsay Allen- Melbourne Boomers
The Boomers recorded a crushing win over Dandenong on Saturday, and Allen played a massive part in this. She was the equal second highest point-scorer for Melbourne, with 18 points. But the way she bought her teammates into the game really stood out, as she found bigger teammates in the paint with ease. Allen ended with five assists and also pulled down three rebounds. While she didn’t do much damage on the scoreboard against Bendigo, Allen still played an important role with six points, five rebounds and two assists.
#24 Brittany McPhee- Perth Lynx
McPhee had a quiet game by her lofty standards against the Sydney Uni Flames, with eight points. Despite single figures in points, she was able to back it up with eight rebounds and four assists, continuing to prove herself as one of the most dangerous players in the league. McPhee stepped it up in Perth’s second game of the round, scoring a team-high 20 points. She also pulled down five rebounds and racked up an assist from 34 minutes of game time.
