Young’s excellent year delivers promise for guard

A STRONG first-up campaign at G League level has suggested former Chicago Bulls two-way point guard Jahmir Young could have a career at the top level at some stage in the future, showing plenty of promise in the 2024/25 season.

After putting together a strong campaign for both the Grand Rapids Gold and Windy City Bulls, Young was named to the NBA G League All-Rookie Team, bouncing back after going undrafted in the 2024 NBA intake, and putting himself on the map as a potential contract option for teams around the league.

During his time with the Maryland Terrapins, the point guard was able to showcase his offensive talents, and after not being selected in the draft, joined the Denver Nuggets for the Summer League, doing enough to earn a two-way contract with the team.

Although he was waived by Denver in October, he signed with the team’s G League affiliate, and began to produce standout performances with the Gold. He and eventual G League Rookie of the Year Trey Alexander were the shining lights for Grand Rapids, and the pair looked electric combining on the offensive end.

Spanning from October to February, Young posted numbers of 22.4 points, 4.5 rebounds, 7.4 assists and 2.1 steals in a standout campaign. During that time, he posted a double-double on seven occasions, was consistently posting 25+ points for the Gold, and delivered a career-best performance of 40 points and 10 assists over the Capital City Go-Go.

A campaign of that calibre was enough to attract the attention of the Chicago Bulls, who cleared up a roster spot and signed Young on a two-way contract. He split his time between the NBA team and the G League affiliate in Windy City, where he continued his impressive form from his time with Grand Rapids.

Although his NBA court time was limited, he still finished the G League with impressive numbers of 21.5 points, 4.8 rebounds, seven assists and two steals a game, while shooting 45.7 per cent from the field, 30.4 per cent from behind the arc and 86.1 per cent from the charity stripe, which was good enough to see him finish third in the G League Rookie of the Year voting.

He stayed with the Bulls for the recent Summer League tournament in Las Vegas, and put his name into the record books with a historic performance. He had the most points in a game in Chicago’s Summer League history with 40 points, going 13/18 from the field and 7/8 from behind the arc.

Despite this performance, he was waived by the Bulls in the following week, although with the body of work he has already built as well as that final performance, NBA teams should be coming forward with contract offers sooner rather than later given what he is capable of offensively.
