Who will fly out of the blocks after the Christmas break?

THE Christmas and New Year break is over, and the Premier Women’s Firsts competition is back in action this weekend.

Will the break rejuvenate a few of the sides? Will Melbourne just keep on dominating? Can Plenty Valley finally get a win on the board this season?

Let us take a look at the four matches in store for this weekend.

Box Hill vs Carlton
Box Hill City Oval

The Mustangs have had an inconsistent season so far. They will be certainly looking to change that and get a little bit more consistency as we head into the second half of the season.

Carlton on the other hand has only had one loss this season, and will be hoping the break has not slowed its momentum.

These two sides have not played each other yet this season, but did play each other twice last season. Box Hill got the win on both occasions last season, but going off this year’s form it is Carlton who probably goes into the clash as favourites.

Melbourne vs Plenty Valley
Albert Ground

It is a tale of first place versus last on the ladder as the Dees take on the Bats. This has the potential to be a very one-sided match, and could be an embarrassing one for Plenty Valley. Melbourne has been the dominant side so far this season and are currently undefeated. Plenty Valley on the other hand have not registered a win yet this season and have not looked like winning.

Melbourne may be missing some of their best players to WNCL duties, but are still a level above Plenty Valley. Recent history is not on the Bats’ side either. In the two meetings between the sides last year, it was Melbourne who secured the win both times.

Essendon Maribyrnong Park vs Prahran
Aberfeldie Park

EMP will certainly be looking to give their season a bit of a kick start this weekend, with only two wins to their name so far.

Prahran on the other hand will be desperate to get some more wins on the board, after they were only able to register one win to date, and that was against Plenty Valley.

These teams were meant to play twice last season, but only got to play each other once. One game did not get to go ahead due to a snap lockdown that weekend. In the match that did get to be played it was the Bombers who got the win.

Dandenong vs Ringwood
Shepley Oval

Dandenong are certainly not having the season they would have wanted as the defending champions, and will be looking to rectify things this weekend.

Ringwood on the other hand are having one of their best seasons, and look primed to make the First 11 finals for the first time since they joined the competition in 2018/19.

These two sides played twice last season, and it was Dandenong who got the win both times, so Ringwood will certainly be looking to avoid history repeating itself this weekend.
