Remarkable bowling haul leads Richmond to triumph

ANOTHER weekend of Victoria Premier Cricket Premier Men’s Firsts has wrapped, with plenty of impressive performances around the competition. In this series, we put the spotlight on one individual performance that may have caught the eye of teammates, opponents and fans. With plenty to choose from each week, it is worth mentioning that there will be some unlucky players that miss out on a weekly basis.

This week, that honour belongs to Casey-South Melbourne batsman Luke Manders, who was terrific at the crease this week. Manders scored a whopping 107 runs off just 86 balls as he drove his side to an easy win over Essendon on the weekend.

This week’s Player of the Week honour goes to Richmond bowler Dominic Matarazzo, who was surgical with ball in hand as his side took down Footscray by six wickets at Central Reserve North on Saturday. Matarazzo was ruthless in taking down the Footscray batting order, proving unplayable for most of the day, finishing with eight wickets and conceding only 16 runs with his 10 overs with ball in hand.

Footscray were only able to conjure 86 runs from their innings, and this was largely due to the impressive work of Matarazzo, who constantly found the right line and length as he tore his way through each batsman who faced him. He found the stumps on three separate occasions, including one of the Footscray openers. To add to the impressive nature of this wicket, it was also with his first delivery of the day.

The Richmond captain took the first eight wickets of the match, as Footscray’s strong start was quickly wiped away, and Matarazzo’s side were able to reach the required total in no time, given it was not even at triple-digits. After a decorated career to date, the medium-pace bowler has claimed 14 wickets in the last two weeks, suggesting he is set to impress even more in the future. If he can reach similar figures on a frequent basis, it will go a long way in pushing Richmond towards the top of the ladder for the remainder of the season.
