Melbourne raises hell to claim Marg Jennings Cup title
MELBOURNE was crowned the Queens of Women’s Premier Under 18s cricket, after the Demons defeated Dandenong in yesterday’s Grand Final of the inaugural Marg Jennings Cup.
Dandenong won the toss and batted first. Openers Lillian Strong and Uvindee Wijesena made a strong start, putting a partnership of 64 on the board before Strong was bowled.
Wijesena and Poppy Gardner then put on a 39 run partnership before things started to wobble for the Panthers. They lost a few quick wickets before they steadied and put a few decent partnerships together. They then lost another couple of cheap wickets at the back end of their innings to finish on 7/174 off their 50 overs. Wijesena continued her great tournament, once again topping the Panthers’ batting card and making a half century.
For the Dees, it was Mia Perrin who topped the bowling charts. She took 2/26 off her five overs. The other wicket takers were all single wicket takers. They were Lucy Page, Hasrat Gill and Vanchica Pathania.
Melbourne’s chase could not have got off to a much worse start, when Amelie O’Meara was caught for one to leave the Dees at 1/2. They then found themselves at 3/22 before they really started to accelerate.
Perrin and Zoe Samuel put on an 84 run partnership to get the Dees innings back on track. This partnership really put the Dees back in the game, as they went on to reach the target in the 35th over and take the title. Unsurprisingly, it was Perrin and Samiel who topped the scoresheet for the Dees. Perrin made 57 while Samuel made 43.
For the Panthers, Thivya Mahendran continued the great tournament she has had with the ball, taking 3/27 off her seven overs. Wijesena nabbed two wickets, while Gardner was the other wicket taker with one.
Unsurprisingly, it was Perrin who was named Player of the Match, while it was Samuel who took Player of the Tournament honours.
Yesterday’s Grand Final saw the culmination of the inaugural Marg Jennings Cup, which saw 10 of the Premier Cricket clubs from both the men’s and women’s competitions competing for the inaugural title. The clubs competing were Prahran, Ringwood, Geelong, Carlton, Plenty Valley, Melbourne, Box Hill, Greenvale Kangaroos, Essendon Maribyrnong Park and Dandenong.
