Victorian Premier Cricket: Women’s 1sts wrap

AS we get further and further into the back half of the 2021/22 Victorian Premier Cricket Women’s Premier 1sts season, the ladder finally gets more settled and we are starting to get a better picture of where each team really sits. Let’s take a look and what took place last weekend in the Women’s 1sts competition.

Plenty Valley vs Melbourne

This was expected to be the most lopsided match of the weekend, and it lived up to that expectation.

Melbourne batted first, and after a 105 opening run partnership from Teagan Parker and Rhiann O’Donnell they were able to post a whopping 4/306 off their 50 overs. O’Donnell was the star with the bat making 98, while Amy Vine finished on 80 not out.

Melbourne defended its total with ease. The Bats lost their first three wickets for only nine runs and never got close to recovering from there. In the end, they were bowled out for 60 in the 35th over.

Jasmine Nevins was the only Plenty Valley batter to hit double figures with her score of 27. Meanwhile for the Dees, Hayleigh Brennan and Hasrat Gill were the pick of the bowlers with three wickets each. Ella Hayward also took two wickets.

Prahran vs Essendon Maribyrnong Park

Prahran won the toss, and decided to have a bat first. Things got off to a bit of a disaster when they lost two quick wickets to find themselves at 2/9. They then lost another two wickets to find themselves at 4/12.

They then recovered slightly and began to build but those early wickets loss came back to bite them as they were bowled out for 143.

Merinda Hale was the only one of Prahran’s batters to get a decent start, making 58. For the Bombers, Samantha Bates took 3/19 off 10 overs (including two maidens). Milly Illingworth, Katia Jomini and Makinley Blows all took two wickets.

In reply, the Bombers found themselves at 2/16, but recovered to reach the target with just under five overs to go. Bates top scored with 35.

For the True Blues, it was Rhys McKenna who was the best of the bowlers, taking 3/21 off her 10 overs, which included two maidens. Dia Shah also took two wickets.

Ringwood vs Dandenong

Ringwood batted first, and had a bit of a collapse to find themselves at 6/97 after 26 overs. They were eventually bowled out for 167 halfway through the 42nd over, with only two batters making double figure scores. However, those two batters were Una Raymond-Hoey with 72 and Erin Carroll with 65 not out.

For the Panthers, Kimberley Garth, Emma Gallagher and Lucy Cripps all took three wickets each. In reply, despite the early stumble, the chase was not really an issue for Dandenong and they reached the target with 10 overs to spare.

The easy chase was off the back of a 62 not out from Tiana Atkinson, and a 46 from skipper Garth. For the Rams, skipper Bhavisha Devchand was the only wicket taker.

Carlton vs Box Hill

The Blues batted first, and were bowled out for 152. Openers Sophie Reid and Cailin Green put on a solid 66 run opening stance, but in the end they were the only ones to really get a decent starts with the bat, as Reid made 40 and Green made 39.

Meanwhile for the Mustangs, vice captain Holly Spencer took an impressive 4/27 off her 9.2 overs, which included three maidens. Isabel White took 3/26 off her 10 overs, which included one maiden.

In reply, a 60 from Anna Lanning was not enough as they Mustangs fell 12 runs short of their target. For Carlton, Green and Rebeka Vandort took two wickets each.
