Damaging spell sets Essendon up for triumph
ANOTHER weekend of Victoria Premier Cricket Premier Men’s Firsts has wrapped, with plenty of impressive performances around the competition. In this series, we put the spotlight on one individual performance that may have caught the eye of teammates, opponents and fans alike. With plenty to choose from each week, it is worth mentioning that there will be some unlucky players that miss out on a weekly basis.
This week, that status belongs to Prahran batsman William Sutherland, who got dangerously close to dragging his side to an upset win over Melbourne on the weekend. He cracked a total of 136 from just 120 balls in the loss. With the rest of his side underperforming with bat in hand, Sutherland was almost a match-winner, but his team fell eight runs short of pulling off the comeback win.
This week’s Player of the Week award goes to Essendon bowler Cameron McClure, who ripped through the opposing batting order in his side’s win on Saturday. Against Footscray, McClure was outstanding with ball in hand and was one of the major reasons for his side getting over the line in the upset win.
McClure was able to dismiss both openers in very quick fashion, finding the right line and length early in the match. He sent Dylan Brasher walking for a duck, before bowling Daniel Satori shortly after. Suddenly, Prahran was 2/15 thanks to the bowling efforts of one man.
He struck again shortly after, drawing the edge of Dean Russ, with the snick heading straight into the gloves of the keeper for his third wicket of the day. To top it all off, he was able to repeat the feat by dismissing Ashley Armstrong for just two runs as he announced himself as the most damaging bowler of the match.
In the end, he finished with impressive figures of 4/13 from his 10-over spell, dominating the opposing batsmen and terrorising whoever was at the crease to face him. The most impressive part of this outing is the fact that all of his wickets came at the top of the Footscray batting order, as he produced what was clearly his best performance of the 2021/22 season.
