Penultimate round sets up enthralling final week of Women’s 1sts

IT was a good round to host in the Victorian Premier Cricket Women’s 1sts competition, with all four home sides winning their respective matches.

The exciting and shocking results from this past weekend mean that we have one hell of a final round coming up next weekend, with six sides still in finals contention.

Box Hill vs Melbourne

With their season on the line, the Mustangs defied the odds and caused a huge upset, consigning Melbourne to its second consecutive defeat.

Batting first, the Mustangs made 6/147 off the back of 79 from skipper Zoe Griffiths.

Despite the skipper’s solid dig, everyone else essentially failed around her, with Isabella Weber the only other batter to make a double figure score.

In reply, after an okay start the Dees just lost too many wickets too quickly and were bowled out for 112. No one made more then Stephanie Townsend’s 38.

From a bowling perspective, the best of the Dees bowlers was Ella Hayward, who took 3/7 off her 10 overs, which included a whopping six maidens.

Meanwhile for the Mustangs, it was Isabel White who topped the bowling tally for her side, taking three wickets.

This win means that the Mustangs are still well and truly in finals contention, but have got to beat the Bombers next week and potentially hope some results go her way.

Prahran vs Carlton

Although their finals chances may be gone, that has not stopped Prahran finding some late season momentum, this time taking down Carlton.

After Prahran made 7/193, a 55 from Nipuni Hansika was not enough for Carlton as her teammates fell cheaply around her and the Blues were all out for 145.

For Prahran, it was Paris Bowdler who proved the star with the bat, making 57.

Meanwhile from a bowling perspective, Matilda Pendergast took four wickets, while Rhys McKenna took three.

Meanwhile for Carlton, Cailin Green was the absolute star with the ball, taking 5/40 off her 10 overs, which included a maiden.

This result doesn’t have any ladder implications, but certainly gives Prahran some late season confidence to take into next season.

Ringwood vs Plenty Valley

Despite almost blowing it, Ringwood kept Plenty Valley’s winless run in tact and in turn kept their own finals hopes alive.

Plenty Valley actually made one of its highest scores of the season, a very competitive 173.

It was not enough though as Ringwood easily reached the target in the 35th over, despite almost blowing it, reaching the target with just three wickets in hand.

For the Rams, captain Bhavisha Devchand was again the star with the bat, this time making 77.

Meanwhile from a bowling perspective, Jordyn Doevelaar was the best of the Rams bowlers, taking three wickets.

Meanwhile for the Bats, Jessie Hulett made 49 and Ribhya Syan took four wickets.

Dandenong vs Essendon Maribyrnong Park

After ending Melbourne’s undefeated run last week, things could not have gone much more different for the Bombers this week.

They had an absolute disaster with the bat, bowled out for a mere 52 in only the 23rd over.

Samantha Bates’ 24 was the only score in the double figures.

In reply, despite having Dandenong on the ropes at 5/10, they just couldn’t finish the job and Dandenong got the win in only 26 overs. Poppy Gardner’s 29 not out was the only one for the Panthers in double figures.

From a bowling perspective, Kimberley Garth was the pick of the Panthers’ bowlers, taking four wickets.

Meanwhile for the Bombers, both Bates and Milly Illingworth took three wickets.
