AFTER border closures meant that both sides had to wait a while for their first match this season, it was South Australia who got their season off to an ideal start with a win over Western Australia.
The Scorpions didn’t take long to get the first wicket on the board, when Chloe Piparo was caught halfway through the second over. Ashley Day also went cheaply before Maddy Darke and Mathilda Carmichael steadied the innings and got it back on track with an 86-run partnership to get their side back on track.
They lost several more wickets to ultimately finish on 8/228 off their 50 overs.
Unsurprisingly, it was Darke and Carmichael that top scored for Western Australia. Darke made 49 while Carmichael notched 75. Meanwhile for South Australia, it was Samantha Betts who was an absolute star with the ball, taking 5/46 off 10 overs. Ellie Falconer took two wickets while Jemma Barsby took one.
In their chase, the South Australians made a much better start then the Warriors did, with openers Bridget Patterson and Emma de Broughe putting on a 58-run opening stance before Patterson was dismissed in the 12th over. They then lost another wicket two runs later but de Broughe and Courtney Webb put on a 77-run partnership to settle things.
While wickets continued to tumble and the overs ticked down, SA was able to reach the target one ball shy of the end of the 48th over, with two wickets spare.
Unsurprisingly, it was de Broughe who top scored for the Scorpions with 58. Webb also had a good innings with the bat, making 49.
Meanwhile for the Western Australians, Amy Edgar was the main destroyer with the ball with four wickets. Taneale Peschel also took two wickets.
Western Australia won’t have to wait long to try and exact revenge on its neighbours. These two sides play each other again on Tuesday.
