Need an innings linchpin? Ask Manix-Geeves

A PIVOTING innings from Tasmanian opener Emma Manix-Geeves has guided Tasmania to a five-wicket win over Western Australia on Sunday. Meeting on neutral territory at Kippax Oval in Canberra, the Tigers sent WA in to bat before chasing down the 188-run target with five overs to spare.

Manix-Geeves’ game-high knock of 68 (125) proved the glue to Tasmania’s response, as she formed a 57-run stand with Elyse Villani (34 off 43) and 84 alongside Corinne Hall (48 off 47) to help her side grab its third win for the season and jump into second spot on the Women’s National Cricket League (WNCL) ladder.

Western Australia got off to a positive start as Chloe Piparo and Ashley Day compiled a 51-run opening stand, but it was ended by Sarah Coyte as she saw the latter hold out to mid-off in the 15th over.

Piparo (54 off 88) and Maddy Darke (50 off 84) were the two who got WA’s innings rolling, both notching half-centuries but not getting much further. Their 70-run partnership was broken as Piparo broke her own stumps with a reverse sweep, as the Sandgropers looked to force the issue.

It spurred a collapse, as WA lost 3-7 in three overs with Molly Strano nabbing two poles in three balls amid the chaos. Amy Edgar (25 off 46) and Piepa Cleary (26no) steered the back-end of WA’s effort, though the former was run out on the last ball trying to extract as much as possible from the 50 overs.

188 at 3.75 per over was what the West Australians managed, lead by dual 50s at the top of the order. Coyte (2-36) and Strano (2-47) collected key wickets for the Tigers, whose economical bowling display frustrated their adversaries with boundaries hard to come by.

In reply, the Tigers put together a controlled chase lead by Manix-Geeves, who fell a couple of overs short of carrying her bat. The 20-year-old was bowled by Zoe Britcliffe, who dismissed Tasmania’s top three via the same mode to finish with 3-33 off her 10 overs.

Three wickets fell in as many overs as Tasmania looked to go big and finish in style, before Strano hit the winning runs to secure her side’s comfortable victory.

The winless West Aussies face a quick turnaround as they travel again, set to take on Victoria (0-4) on Tuesday in a game which should deliver either side their first points of the season. Meanwhile, Tasmania will remain in Canberra and battle the ACT Meteors on Wednesday.
