Webb and Dooley the stars as SA gets WNCL season back on track

SOUTH Australia got its Women’s National Cricket League (WNCL) season back on track on Tuesday, defeating the ACT Meteors by seven wickets.

After quite the team performance with the ball, the 167-run target for the Scorpions was never really going to be much of a challenge.

The Scorpions sent the Meteors into bat, and it only took until one ball into the sixth over for the former to strike, when Katie Mack was caught in front to leave ACT at 1/23.

Their next partnership was a little better, but after that the Meteors kept losing wickets far too regularly to get any real momentum going.

In the end they were bowled out for 166 with four overs left in their innings.

Once again, Erin Osborne was the saviour of the ACT innings, with the veteran’s 53 a real linchpin of the innings as the rest of the innings collapsed around her.

Meanwhile for the South Australians, it really was a team effort with the ball. Every bowler that was used nabbed at least one wicket, with Jemma Barsby topping the tally with three of them.

The South Australian chase got off to a but of a disaster start when Bridget Patterson was dismissed cheaply to leave her side at 1/7.

Emma de Broughe was then knocked over four overs later and the Scorpions had only added 10 more runs as things looked still shaky.

Enter Josie Dooley and Courtney Webb.

The pair put on a 136-run partnership to really put the Scorpions’ innings back on track.

Webb was actually the last wicket to fall and Dooley and Annie O’Neil finished off the job halfway through the 36th over.

Unsurprisingly, it was Webb and Dooley who were ultimately the top scorers for South Australia.

Webb made 72 while Dooley made 65 not out.

Meanwhile for the Meteors, Nicola Hancock took two of the three wickets, while Alisha Bates took the third.

These two teams don’t have to wait too long to resume hostilities. The rematch between the two sides is set to go down this coming Friday.
