Voll helps Queensland roll WA for second WNCL win

A TERRIFIC all-round performance from Queensland’s Georgia Voll has helped the Fire roll to their second win of the 2021/22 Women’s National Football League (WNCL) season. Coming up against the winless West Australians on Tuesday, Queensland’s total of 231 off 49 overs was more than enough in the 69-run triumph at Chisholm Oval in Canberra.

Having won the toss and elected to bat, Queensland’s opening duo put on 58 runs across 15 overs before Molly Healy broke through to claim Voll (36 off 43). Her opening partner, Tara Wheeler was gone four overs later, but that only brought Mikayla Hinkley to the crease.

The 23-year-old blasted 64 (73) as wickets sporadically fell throughout the Fire’s innings. A Holly Ferling flourish of 44 (40) also helped lift the run rate, but Queensland’s tail failed to wag and the Fire were bowled out for a very defendable 231 off 49 overs.

WA quick Zoe Britcliffe claimed 5-53 off 10 overs, including the key wickets of Hinkley and Ferling. No other West Australian bowler claimed more than one wicket, though Amy Edgar snared one of two run-outs for the innings to go with her single pole.

It took only until the sixth over for WA to lose its first wicket as Georgia Prestwidge got her first, with Maddy Darke caught behind. In came Maia Bouchier, who battered 79 (70), including 11 boundaries in what was truly a lone hand in WA’s innings.

Barring Chloe Piparo, who managed 17 (55) in a 62-run partnership with Bouchier, no other WA batter hit double digits and they were rolled for 162 off 39.3 overs.

Player of the match Voll broke through to claim Bouchier en route to registering innings-best figures of 3-20 off six overs. Also among Queensland’s attack, Prestwidge (2-15) and Lucy Hamilton (2-35) kept the pressure on with wickets, helping their side come away comfortable victors.

Western Australia remains winless, though there will soon be a chance for redemption as the two sides will rematch on Friday at the same venue.
