Meteors finish season on a high with win over WA

THE ACT Meteors have sent retiring star Erin Osborne off in style, defeating Western Australia in their final Women’s National Cricket League (WNCL) match of the season.

The result also sees Western Australia finish one of its worst seasons on record, going winless throughout the 2021/22 campaign.

The West Australians chose to bat first, but it was not long before the Meteors broke through, trapping Maddy Darke in front in the fourth over. They struck again three overs later to have WA at 2/32, and then again three balls after that to have them reeling at 3/32 halfway through the eighth over.

It was a sign of things to come as wickets continued to tumble far too regularly and although some WA batters got small starts, they could not quite go on to make the scores required for a defendable total.

In the end, the West Australians were bowled out for only 117 in the 38th over.

The Meteors’ bowling was also very tight, which didn’t help the West Australians make many sneaky extra runs. The ACT only conceded seven wides for the entire innings, and no more extras.

Top scorer for the West Australians was Amy Edgar with 24 not out, while Mathilda Carmichael managed 23.

Meanwhile for the ACT, the wicket taking load was very well shared, with every bowler used nabbing at least one wicket. Zoe Cooke did top the tally though with three, while Osborne and Gabrielle Sutcliffe snared two each.

The ACT chase didn’t get off to the best start when Katie Mack was dismissed for five in the fourth over. Erica Kershaw was then dismissed four balls later without any addition to the ACT total to leave the Meteors on shaky ground at 2/15.

It wasn’t until Olivia Porter and Osborne got to work that things started to turn around for the Meteors. They took the total from 3/47 to 4/109 before Porter was dismissed.

That meant there wasn’t too much left for Osborne and Carly Leeson to do, and so the Meteors reached the target in the 19th over.

Top scorer for the Meteors was Porter with 58, while Osborne finished with 32 not out in her final innings with the bat.

Meanwhile for the Western Australians, four bowlers took one wicket each – Edgar, Taneale Peschel, Piepa Cleary and Zoe Britcliffe.
