WE have come to the end of yet another Victorian Women’s Premier Cricket season, full of highs and lows. Now that the season has finished, let us take a look back at how the eight clubs went across the whole season, and how things went since their mid-season report cards.

Today we look at Box Hill, who finished 4th in 2021/22.

The back half of Box Hill’s season was a tale of two halves. After losing the first four after the Christmas break, they then rallied and win the next three, including in the process becoming one of only two clubs all season to defeat the seemingly impossible to defeat Demons.  

Then it all came down to the last round. Defeat fellow finals aspirants Essendon Maribyrnong Park and they were into the finals. That they did, so they were finals bound.

Unfortunately for the Mustangs, they found themselves against the red hot Demons in the first week of the finals, and they were unable to replicate their performance from only a fortnight prior and their season was done.

Top performers

From a batting perspective, skipper Zoe Griffiths comes up on top of the table for the Mustangs. Across her 13 matches this season, she has made 387 runs at an average of 43. She reached 50 four times across the season, and her highest score was 79 not out.

Next on the list is Victorian star Anna Lanning. She made 381 runs at an average of 42.33, with a highest score of 106 not out. She also made two 50s to go with that century. Rounding out the top five most runs scored for the Mustangs is Holly Spencer, Isabel White and Lara Shannon.

Looking across at the bowling figures, and it is White who tops the table. She took 25 wickets across the season at an economy rate of 3.86, which are remarkable figures considering she is only a teenager. Next on the list is the vice captain in Spencer, who took 18 wickets across the season at an even better economy rate of 3/04.

Third on the list with 17 wickets is Griffiths, which signals a remarkable turnaround in her career as she used to be a wicket keeper. Fourth is Danielle Montague with 13 wickets, followed by Kristie Gordon with 10.

Where to from here?

Well, the Mustangs should be pleased with how 2021/22 ultimately ended up. They had some inconsistencies they need to fix up in order to be a true finals contender, but they won when they needed to (most of the time) and they have a lot of exciting young kids coming through, so there are a lot of positives for the ‘Tangs.
