2021/22 Women’s Premier Cricket season recap: Geelong
WE have come to the end of yet another Victorian Women’s Premier Cricket season, full of highs and lows. Now that the season has finished, let us take a look back at how the eight clubs went across the whole season, and how things went since their mid-season report cards.
Except, today’s season wrap up is a little different. It’s not a Premier 1sts side, but it is a club who certainly made an impact on Premier Cricket – Geelong.
Geelong has been a mainstay of Premier Men’s Cricket for a long time now, but 2021/22 was the first season it entered teams into the Premier Women’s competition. The Cats took the path Ringwood did when they entered Women’s Premier cricket and entered their 1st XI into the Premier Seconds competition, with a second side competing in the Premier Thirds competition.
And after a strong start from both sides, it was looking like it was going to be a debut season to remember for the Cats.
Unfortunately for their Seconds side, that did not quite go to plan.
They slid back down the ladder as the season progressed, and ultimately finished seventh and missed finals.
For their Third XI side though, things were a different story.
They finished top of the table with the best run rate in the competition, however could not go all the way as they lost the Grand Final to Melbourne.
Top performers
For the Second XI, Maddie Green, Chloe McKenzie, Rebekah Morris, Bronte Leishman and Renee Cox got amongst the runs this season and led the run making tally for the Cats. While with the ball, Cox, Leishman, Chantal Mason, Shanaye Alexander and Sarah Pike led the way with the most wickets across the season.
Meanwhile for the Third XI, Ella Couch, Ruby Couch, Maddison Fitzpatrick, Heidi Schneider and Sophie Walsh led the way with the bat, and [Ruby] Couch, Walsh, Charlotte Poyner, Summer Don, Grace Schrama and led the way with the ball.
Where to from here?
Well for a debut season in Premier Cricket, 2021/22 was a big tick for the Cats.
They can build on what they achieved this season and if they keep this kinds of performances up and get even better, no doubt they will be pushing for First XI action soon.
