Mooney and McGrath get Aussies out of tricky situation
THE Aussies have finished the group stage of the 2022 Commonwealth Games undefeated, after defeating Pakistan by 44 runs.
Tahlia McGrath starred with both bat and ball as the Australians look ahead to the semi final stage and who they will meet.
After electing to bat first, the Aussies found themselves at 2/19 in the powerplay and looking very shaky.
Then, enter McGrath.
She and Beth Mooney then put on a 141 run partnership to steer the Aussie innings right back on course.
The Aussies went from disasterville to ultimately finishing on the very competitive 2/160 off their 20 overs.
McGrath finished on 78 not out, while Mooney finished on 70 not out. The pair also hit two sixes and 18 fours between them.
What made the batting performance even more impressive was the fact that Pakistan only conceded four extras, so it really was all the Australians’ doing.
Meanwhile for the Pakistanis, Fatima Khan and Sadia Iqbal were the two bowlers who picked up the wickets.
In reply, Pakistan’s batting innings got off to a start even shakier then the Australian batting innings had had.
The Pakistanis were 2/8 at the end of the second over, and although Bismah Maroof and Omaima Sohail steadied for the next few overs, that was the last real patch of resistance they would have for the innings.
They just kept losing too many wickets too quickly, and in the end they finished on 8/116 off their 20 overs.
It would have been even worse for the Pakistanis if the Aussies had bowled straighter.
They bowled 12 wides, which is a lot particularly for a side like Australia and so they will be keen to fix that before the semi finals.
It was actually Khan who top scored with 35 not out, followed by Sohail and Maroof on 23 each.
McGrath was the star with the ball too for the Aussies, taking 3/13 off her three overs.
