WBBL08 Weekly Wrap: Opening Weekend

THE WBBL got underway over the weekend, with plenty of teams making a statement even this early on in the season.

Sydney Sixers (6/143) defeated Brisbane Heat (8/141)

Despite an almost half century from Georgia Redmayne, it was not enough as half centuries from both Erin Burns and Ellyse Perry ensured victory would go to the team in pink.

From a bowling perspective it was Maitlin Brown who starred for the Sixers with 3/20 off three overs, while it was a pair of Jess’ who topped the bowling for the Heat. Jess Kerr nabbed 2/17 off four overs, while Jess Jonassen took 2/21 off her four overs.

Hobart Hurricanes (5/125) defeated Sydney Thunder (9/106)

On not a great day for the batters, the Hurricanes got their season off to a great start with a win over the Thunder.

Heather Graham took 3/15 off four overs for the Hurricanes, while Molly Strano took 3/18 off three.

Meanwhile for the Thunder Sam Bates took 2/16 off four overs (which included two maidens), while new recruit Chloe Tryon took 2/14 off three.

Sydney Sixers (2/151) defeated Adelaide Strikers (9/134)

It was a masterclass from the Sixers, as they beat Adelaide to win their second game in a row and remain undefeated.

All the star performances really were from the pick side of the clash equation.

With the bat it was Suzie Bates (82 not out) and Perry (58) who starred, while from a bowling perspective Sophie Ecclestone took 4/17 off her four overs.

Brisbane Heat (3/179) defeated Melbourne Stars (8/170)

Despite a valiant fightback from the Stars, it was not enough as the Heat held on for the win.

Ellie Johnston starred for the Heat with the bat, making 54, while Jonassen (3/36 off four) and Amelia Kerr (2/33 off four) were the pick of the Heat bowlers.

Meanwhile for the Stars Lauren Winfield-Hill got the innings off to a great start with a 74, while Annabel Sutherland’s 45 ensured the Stars were in with a chance heading into the final overs.

Melbourne Renegades (6/128) defeated Adelaide Strikers (7/126)

Despite no one really starring with the bat for the Renegades, they did enough to back up the great start from their bowlers and down the Strikers to get their campaign off to a great start.

Sophie Molineux took 4/23 off her four overs in a real captain’s performance for the victors, while Shabnim Ismail took 2/30 off her four overs

Meanwhile for the defeated Strikers Megan Schutt (2/23 off four) and Amanda-Jade Wellington (2/26 off four) starred with the ball.

Sydney Sixers (6/147) defeated Melbourne Stars (9/120)

The Sixers kept their winning record for the weekend at 100% after they defeated the Stars by 27 runs.

Sydney’s win got off to a great start thanks to Alyssa Healy’s 43 with the bat, while Brown had another great game with the ball (taking 3/25 off her four overs), as did Ashleigh Gardner (2/19 off four).

Meanwhile for the Stars Kim Garth (2/21 off four) and Sutherland (2/30 off four) both had great games with the ball.

Perth Scorchers (1/89) defeated Sydney Thunder (8/88)

The Perth Scorchers got their season off to a perfect start, with a very easy win over the Thunder.

Lilly Mills (2/12 off four), Marizanne Kapp (2/15 off four with one maiden) and Alana King (2/17 off four) all stared with the ball for the Scorchers, which made things a breeze for the likes of Sophie Devine (44 not out).

Perth Scorchers (2/110) defeated Hobart Hurricanes (9/109)

The Scorchers’ good start to the season continued in their second game, as they comfortably took care of the Hurricanes.

The real stars of the show were the Scorchers bowlers, with Taneale Peschel (3/13 off four), King (3/15 off four) and Kapp (2/13 off four) all taking multiple wickets.
