Campher lifts Ireland past Scotland

A TERRIFIC individual performance from Ireland’s Curtis Campher has driven his side to a six-wicket triumph over Scotland in the ICC T20 Men’s World Cup on Wednesday night.

In the first of two games to take place on Wednesday, Ireland was catapulted past its Scottish opponents by an excellent effort from Campher, who delivered with both bat and ball in the victory.

With the tournament in full swing, the result may prove vital for the Irish, who bounced back following a loss to Zimbabwe earlier in the week.

Scotland (5/176) def. by Ireland (4/180)

The Scots batted first and looked in trouble when opener George Munsey was trapped lbw for one run by Mark Adair. However, their fortunes turned around when fellow opener Michael Jones got going and made his way to a whopping 86. Not afraid to take the bowlers on, he found the boundary 10 times with four of those being sixes. With a strike rate of 156.36, he was able to put his side in a winning position.

Matthew Cross (28 runs from 21 balls) and skipper Richie Berrington (37 runs from 27 balls) also helped boost their side’s total to a defendable amount of 176. However, both were dismissed by 23-year-old all-rounder Campher, with the medium-fast bowler able to force poor shots, with the pair both caught as Soctland’s innings came to a close. Campher’s figures of 2/9 gave Ireland some

Ireland also looked to be in dire straights in the opening stages of their time at the crease, with both openers sent packing on 14 runs or less. The remainder of their top order also fell for 20 or less, before Campher came in and steadied the ship. He showed no fear in taking on almost any delivery that was sent his way, often using drives to conjure boundaries along the ground. He smacked 72 off just 32 balls, with a strike rate of 225.

He combined well with fellow middle-order batsmen George Dockrell, who showed great composure on his way to 39 runs from 27 deliveries, doing his best to get Campher on strike while also picking the right shot whenever he faced a ball. In the end, Ireland got over the line with just six balls remaining, in a thrilling finish to the match.

Wednesday’s second game saw the West Indies finally get on the board for the tournament, after taking down Zimbabwe by 31 runs, after a disappointing start earlier in the week.
