Silky knock puts Tigers in front

A CAREER-BEST performance from Tasmania Tigers skipper Jordan Silk has motored Tasmania to a whopping score on day three of their clash against Victoria in the Sheffield Shield on Monday.

The domestic cult hero produced a whopping knock, leading his side from the front as they stormed past the total set by Victoria in the first innings to take a commanding lead in the match.

The Vics now face a race against time as time runs out to chase down the required total having trailed by 140 heading into the final day, with a draw a much more feasible target for the visiting side, who were stunned by the power hitting of Silk and Tasmania.

Tasmania 2nd innings – 535 all out

Jordan Silk – 154* (161)

Silk came in at three, replacing Tim Ward who fell nine runs short of his second Sheffield Shield century in agonising fashion.

Determined to not see his side suffer a top order collapse, Silk began his time at the crease with composure, not trying to bite off too much and ensuring he kept his wicket heading into lunch.

While it was a solid strategy for longevity, it was not going to help if Tassie could not produce a winning total, so he became much more aggressive in the afternoon, as his score rapidly rose along with his side’s.

It was evident Silk was in for a big day based on the manner he brought up his half-century, first smacking the ball over deep midwicket, but then driving a four past third man the very next ball. His shot selection and execution were as good as anyone from either side, and once Tasmania reached the required total, he put the foot down.

Forming a 100-run partnership with Jarrod Freeman, Silk ensure the Tigers’ run rate was at its maximum, still finding the boundary with ease. He finished the innings unbeaten, having completely outclassed the opposition.

He finished with 14 boundaries for the match including five sixes, bringing his BBL big hitting style of play to the Shield, and punishing the Victorian bowling attack. Five of those were sixes, as he took on both pace and spin bowlers, to produced what could be a matchwinning performance. With BBL season just around the corner, Silk looks destined for a big year once again, especially with bat in hand.
