IT was certainly a day for batters at the Junction Oval on Sunday, as plenty of big scores were made. It was also a day for teams getting rescued by individual acts of brilliance after shaky starts.

One of those rescuers was Stars gun Annabel Sutherland, who rescued her team after said shaky start and with an innings of 62 not out helped guide her team to the victory over local rivals the Renegades.

Although she starred with both bat and ball on Sunday, this Player Focus will look specifically at her batting efforts.

The Renegades batted first on Sunday and made 148 from their 20 overs. Pretty decent score by any definition, and things were looking good for them at the nine over mark when the Stars were 2/46. Then enter Sutherland, who went to work to get her Stars back in the match.

It was a slow but composed start from Sutherland, whose first four runs were all singles. She took a bit of a back seat early as batting partner Bess Heath already had her eye in and was hitting plenty of boundaries.

Even when Heath departed and Tess Flintoff came to the crease, Sutherland too a bit of a back seat as Flintoff got going quickly. After Flintoff departed it was go time for Sutherland, who then hit her first boundary with a lot of guided power down to mid wicket.

Once the Stars took their Power Surge, Sutherland did not waste any time, whacking a four straight down the ground, then a six over square leg and then another six down the ground off the first three balls of the Surge. She went on to take 17 runs from the first over of the Surge.

The runs kept coming in the Surge for Sutherland, as she hit another four down square in the second over of the Surge. She was almost called for LBW at the end of the Surge, but after the Renegades reviewed the original not out decision it was determined that she was indeed not out.

Sutherland was dropped once in the penultimate over and almost run out in the last, but after the Stars needed 23 off the last over, that was no problem for Sutherland as she hit three sixes in a row and not only brought up her half century with one of those sixes, but her efforts won the game for her team.
