Preview: WBBL08 Final – Sydney Sixers vs. Adelaide Strikers

THE day the 2022 Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) Final is here. This year’s decider sees a top two clash between Sydney Sixers and Adelaide Strikers. The Sixers and the Strikers may have had very strong WBBL08s, but things could not have been more different for them last season.

Sydney find themselves back in the decider after finishing dead last in WBBL07, while Adelaide made the final last year after finishing fourth but could not overcome a very strong Perth side. Despite that last season form, it is the Sixers who will go in as favourites tonight.

They finished three games ahead of the Strikers on the ladder, and have one of the strongest line ups the tournament has seen. From Alyssa Healy and Suzie Bates up the top of the order, to allrounders Ellyse Perry and Ash Gardner, and even their lesser known stars like Kate Peterson have all shone this WBBL tournament.

But do not count the Strikers out. Their captain Tahlia McGrath is a classy allrounder, as is West Indian star Deandra Dottin. The Strikers’ highest scorer for the tournament, South African Laura Wolvaardt, has actually scored more runs than the Sixers’ top run maker for the tournament Perry.

Their leading wicket taker is also the leading wicket taker of the entire tournament thus far, and that is Australian star Megan Schutt. Amanda-Jade Wellington is also in the top four wicket takers for the tournament. Then the Strikers also have the likes of Bridget Patterson and Madeline Penna, who proved the other night their reliability to finish out an innings.

The two sides have played twice this year, with both teams winning one game each. It is worthwhile noting that the second match between the sides this year was the first time the Sixers had suffered a loss all tournament.

Fatigue may also play a part in tonight’s clash. The Strikers come into tonight’s clash off a two day break, while the Sixers have had the best part of a week off. Overall, this will be an enthralling contest and neither side will give up until the final ball is bowled.

The 2022 WNBL Final will take place tonight at North Sydney Oval. The match starts at 5:20pm local time.
