England win series opener as Sciver smacks and Wyatt whacks
A STELLAR performance with the bat from Natalie Sciver and Danni Wyatt and with the ball from Charlie Dean has seen England race away to a comfortable first up win against the West Indies.
After being sent in to bat, the English got off to a strong start, going at about a run a ball off the opening couple of overs.
The hosts did keep taking regular enough wickets though, with the English unable to get partnerships of more than 50 runs at a time in the first half of their innings.
However, it was not until Sciver and Wyatt were at the crease together that things truly got going for the English.
The two stalwarts put on a 103 run partnership for the fifth wicket as they really blew things out of reach for the West Indies.
Thanks largely to a 90 from Sciver and 68 from Wyatt, the English were able to reach 7/307 off their 50 overs.
Meanwhile for the home side, Chinelle Henry (3/59 off 10 overs with one maiden) and Afy Fletcher (2/66 off 10 overs) were the pick of the bowlers.
In response, the West Indies did not get off to the best of starts, but a 70 run second partnership turned the ship of their innings back on course.
However, that’s where things started to go pear shaped for the home side.
They just kept losing too many wickets too quickly, and so could not really build any momentum.
They were ultimately bowled out for 165 with nine and a half overs left, handing the visitors a nice first up triumph.
The top scorers for the West Indies were Kycia Knight (39) and Hayley Matthews and Rashada Williams (both 34).
Meanwhile for the English, Dean was the pick of the bowlers, picking up 4/35 off her nine overs.
Kate Cross was the other bowler to produce multiple wickets, picking up 2/27 off her eight overs, which included a maiden.
The teams do not have to wait long to resume hostilities, with the Second One Day International set to get underway tonight/tomorrow morning Australian time.
