Dunkley lifts England to second T20 victory
THE English train just keeps on rolling in the Caribbean, this time defeating the West Indies by 16 runs in the second T20 match of their series.
After electing to bat first, the English almost survived the powerplay without losing a wicket, but at the same time did not come out of the gates all guns blazing.
It was a slow and steady approach for much of the first half of the innings, but it was not until the 50-run fourth wicket partnership of Sophia Dunkley and Maia Bouchier that the tourists properly got going.
The partnership ensured the English total would be higher than a run and ball, and ultimately finished at 6/141 off their 20 overs.
The total was a very competitive one, but not the blazingly high totals we have come to expect from the English.
Dunkley ultimately was the top scorer with 43, but no one else really made much of a start.
Meanwhile for the home side it was skipper Hayley Matthews who topped the wicket tally with three to her name.
In response, although the West Indies’ first partnership was not as good as the English opening pair, it would ultimately be one of their most fruitful partnerships of the innings.
The West Indies really had the wobbles early, which really hindered their chances of chasing down the English tally.
The West Indian batters really struggled, with no one making any more than 18, and the extras tally of 16 (which included a whopping 14 wides) outscoring all bar two of the batters, and drawing level with a third.
That batter that did score the 18 was Afy Fletcher, with Shabika Gajnabi one behind on 17 not out.
Meanwhile for the English Charlie Dean picked up three wickets, while Lauren Bell picked up two of her own.
The third T20 of the series takes place on Sunday morning Australian time.
