U19 World Cup Day 8 Wrap – Super 6s get underway

DAY 8 at the Under 19 World Cup saw the opening matches of the Super 6s stage of the Under 19 World Cup, with a few sides coming up short for the first time.

Group 1

Australia consigns India to first tournament loss with solid win

After losing their opening game of the tournament the Aussies have really come back full steam ahead, this time defeating India by seven wickets to hand the Indians their first loss of the tournament.

After some stellar bowling from the Australians, the Indians were bowled out for a mere 87 with just over an over left in their innings, and despite losing three wickets the Aussies managed to get it done in just under 14 overs.

Claire Moore (25 not out) and Amy Smith (26 not out) were the ones to ultimately get the job done for the Aussies with the bat, but it was all the bowlers that set up the win.

Sianna Ginger was the pick of the bowlers, picking up three wickets in consecutive overs, while both Maggie Clark and Milly Illingworth picked up two apiece.

South Africa hands Bangladesh its first loss too

India was not the only ones to come up short for the first time this tournament overnight, with neighbour Bangladesh also losing.

South Africa turned on the screws with the ball to set up a five wicket win.

Chasing 106 for victory, the South Africans certainly took their time but still managed to reach the target with seven balls to spare.

Karabo Meso (32 not out) and Madison Landsman (37) did the bulk of the heavy lifting with the bat for the South Africans, while Kayla Reyneke took four wickets.

For Bangladesh it was Rabeya who was the pick of their bowlers with three wickets.

Group 2

New Zealand beat Rwanda but not easily

New Zealand remains undefeated this tournament after defeating Rwanda, but certainly made things harder for itself than it really should have been.

Chasing only 96, New Zealand kept losing wickets and only had four wickets in the shed when it reached the target, but got the job done with just under four overs spare.

Emma McLeod (59) was the only Kiwi batter to really get a start, while Kate Chandler and Olivia Anderson both picked up two wickets with the ball.

Meanwhile for Rwanda Rosine Irera was a star with the ball, picking up three wickets.

England humble neighbour

England also remains undefeated so far this tournament, after defeating its neighbour Ireland by 121 runs.

After the English posted 2/207 from 20 overs, they then bowled the Irish out for only 86 to record a dominant win.

Sophia Smale and Hannah Baker both picked up three wickets for the English in the win, while there were some dominant performances with the bat for the English too. Grace Scrivens fell seven runs short of recording the tournament’s first ever century, while Liberty Heap also starred, making 42.
