DAY 8 at the T20 World Cup saw a couple of countries pick up their first wins of the tournament, as New Zealand and West Indies both recorded wins in very different situations.
Kiwis on the board
After two poor opening matches of the tournament, New Zealand is finally on the board after it downed Bangladesh by 71 runs.
New Zealand batted first, and made a tournament high score of 3/189 from its 20 overs. Suzie Bates (81 not out), Bernadine Bezuidenhout (44) and Maddy Green (44 not out) all starred with the bat as New Zealand went on a run scoring spree at almost 10 runs an over. On the flipside, Fahima Khatun picked up two of the wickets for Bangladesh while Shorna Akter picked up the other one.
In reply Bangladesh lost their first wicket in the third over, and things just went downhill from there. They did just about double their score in the 46 run fourth wicket partnership, but no other partnerships got anywhere close to that.
It would have been even worse for Bangladesh if New Zealand had bowled straight, with the Kiwis conceding 17 extras. Akter top scored with 31, but she was only one of three batters to make a double figure score, and only one of two to outscore the extras. Meanwhile for New Zealand, Eden Carson starred with the ball picking up three wickets, while Hannah Rowe picked up two.
West Indies edge out Ireland in thriller
The West Indies also got on the board after they downed Ireland in a nail-biting thriller.
The Irish batted first and made 9/137 from their 20 overs. They lost their first wicket with only a run on the board, but recovered significantly with a 90 run second wicket stand. Unfortunately things fell apart after that and they just kept losing wickets.
Orla Prendergast starred with an innings of 61, but unfortunately hers was only one of three double digit scores and only one of two to outscore the extras tally of 15. Shamilia Connell was the main source of wickets for the West Indies with three, and both Karishma Ramharack and Afy Fletcher picking up two.
In reply Hayley Matthews was certainly at her damaging best as she smashed 66 not out, but the West Indies were running out of balls to reach the target. However, they made the target on the penultimate ball of the innings.
The extras tally (only two) was not even what let the Irish down, it was just their inability to dismiss Matthews who was at her big hitting best. Leah Paul and Laura Delany were the two Irish bowlers to pick up wickets, while Gabby Lewis and Amy Hunter both ran out one of the other wickets.
