Fierce rivals stay undefeated in race for semis
DAY 9 at the T20 World Cup saw a pair of fierce rivals win their respective matches to crucially stay undefeated in the race for a birth in the semi finals.
England beats India in battle of undefeated Group 2 combatants
In the battle of the previously undefeated sides in Group 2, it was England who prevailed by 11 runs.
England batted first and after losing its first wicket on the third ball of its innings, had a few cheap partnerships before properly recovering to make 7/151 off their 20 overs. Natalie Sciver-Brunt was the star with the bat for the English with 50, while Amy Jones made 40. Meanwhile for India Renuka Singh Thakur was the star with the ball collecting five of the seven wickets.
In reply, despite the best efforts of Smriti Mandhana (52) and Richa Ghosh (47) India were too slow in reaching the target, only making 5/140. Sarah Glenn was the pick of the English bowlers, picking up two wickets.
Australia flex muscles again
Tournament favourites Australia continued to show why it is so good at the T20 format, this time downing South Africa by six wickets.
After a rare toss win from skipper Meg Lanning, the Aussies sent their hosts into bat, which proved to be a fruitful decision as South Africa only made 6/124 from their 20 overs. Tazmin Brits made 45 and Sune Luus made 20 but no one else got much of a start for the South Africans. Georgia Wareham was the pick of the bowlers for Australia, but everyone else used bar two picked up a single wicket.
In reply some of the Aussie stars went cheaply, but Tahlia McGrath’s 57 ensured that the Aussies still reached their target with three and a half overs to go. Marizanne Kapp was the only multiple wicket taker for South Africa with two to her name.
