Standings get a shake up at the World Cup
DAY 10 at the T20 World Cup 2023 saw some of the standings get a real shake up as the group stage of the tournament nears its end.
Windies defeat Pakistan in thriller
The West Indies have defeated Pakistan by only three runs in an absolute nail biter.
The West Indies only made 6/116 from their 20 overs, thanks to their bowlers it was enough as Pakistan did not quite reach the target.
For the West Indians, Rashada Williams top scored with 30, but not many batters got much of a start which did not help their quest to make a decent total.
So it was all down to the bowlers, with all bar one bowler used recording a double figure number of dot balls in their spell.
Skipper Hayley Matthews was the only one to pick up more than one wicket though with two.
On the flipside Aliya Riaz top scored for Pakistan with 29, while Nida Dar picked up two wickets.
Although the win does not help the West Indies make the semis, it certainly does put a spanner in the works for Pakistan. It needs to win its last game against England and hope Ireland do a number on India to be able to progress.
New Zealand thrashes Sri Lanka, put one foot in semis
New Zealand is one foot into the semi finals after thrashing Sri Lanka by 102 runs.
After smashing 3/162 from their 20 overs, New Zealand absolutely ripped through Sri Lanka, bowling the opposition out in the 16th over.
The win was set up thanks to Suzie Bates and Amelia Kerr, who put on a 110 second wicket stand to really help their side post a competitive total.
Kerr then stepped up again in the bowling innings, as she and Lea Tahuhu picked up two wickets and had multiple overs worth of dot balls in their spell.
On the flipside for Sri Lanka, Chamari Athapaththu top scored with 19, but she was only one of two batters to make a double figure score and outscore the extras count of nine.
This win does keep New Zealand’s tournament alive and end Sri Lanka’s, but the Kiwis’ bad start to the tournament may ultimately cost them.
Depending on what happens in the final match of the group between South Africa and Bangladesh, it may come down to run rate to see who makes it through. South Africa currently has the better run rate, but it still needs to win its last game.
