Big scores, big tallies as Dehli and UP get the win

THERE were two games overnight in the Women’s Premier League, with Delhi and the UP Warriorz getting wins in matches with big scores and even bigger individual performances with the ball.

Delhi far too strong for Bangalore

The Delhi Capitals have made a statement in their opening match of the tournament, defeating the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) by 60 runs.

After Delhi posted a whopping 2/223, RCB certainly made a decent stab at the target, but only produced a knock of 8/163.

Batting first, it was clear Delhi was on for a big score when Meg Lanning and Shafali Verma put on a 162-run opening wicket stand. Verma would go on to make 84 while Lanning would go on to make 72.

Meanwhile for RCB, Heather Knight was the only one to pick up any wickets, with two.

In reply, RCB just lost too many wickets too consistently for anyone to put together the kind of partnerships necessary to reach the Capitals’ huge target.

One thing that did not help RCB’s case was American Tara Norris, who is certainly going to make a name for herself this tournament if her debut performance is anything to go by. Her 5/29 from her four overs was the pick of the bowling performances, with Alice Capsey picking up two wickets and Shikha Pandey picking up the one.

Gujarat improve but not enough as Warriorz win inaugural game

After a disastrous opening game, the Gujarat Giants did improve on their first up performance but it was not enough as they lost to the UP Warriorz by three wickets.

Batting first, the Giants made what in itself is a pretty competitive target of 6/169. Harleen Deol was the star of the innings with 46, but only four batters outscored the extras tally of 14, so without that extras tally things could have been different.

Deepti Sharma and Sophie Ecclestone were the pick of the Warriorz bowlers with two scalps each.

In reply the Warriorz had a bit of a shaky start, finding themselves at 3/20 inside three overs, and almost did not make the target, but thanks to Grace Harris (59 not out) and earlier Kiran Navgire (53), they were able to surpass the target with one ball in hand.

Coming into the Giants side as a late replacement for Deandra Dottin, Kim Garth certainly made a statement in her first game, taking 5/36 from her four overs.
