Mumbai’s marvellous Matthews helps guide the Indians to 2/2
THE MUMBAI Indians are two from two this Women’s Premier League (WPL) season after they comfortably defeated the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) by nine wickets.
After RCB were bowled out for 155 in the 19th over, Mumbai’s top order ensured that the chase was a pretty simple one, reaching the target in the 15th over.
The Royal Challengers found themselves at 4/43 inside the powerplay, and that poor start really stunted their ability to go on and make a particularly powerful score. 155 is often a competitive score in most women’s cricket competitions, but with the power on show in the WPL it just ultimately is not enough in this one.
Most of RCB’s batters made a double figure score, but no one went on to make a really decent score.
The best of the bunch for the Royal Challengers was Richa Ghosh, who finished on 28.
Meanwhile for the Indians, Hayley Matthews was the star with the ball, taking three wickets, while both Saika Ishaque and Amelia Kerr picked up two scalps each.
In the chase, despite Yastika Bhatia going for relatively cheap, it was not an issue as Matthews and Natalie Sciver-Brunt punt on a 100+ run partnership to guide their side home.
Matthews finished top scorer with 77 not out, while Sciver-Brunt finished on 55 not out.
Preeti Bose was the only one to pick up a wicket for the Royal Challengers, trapping Bhatia for LBW in the fifth over.
The Royal Challengers have a few days off to regroup and try and get their first win on the board, with their next match against fellow winless side Gujarat Giants set for Thursday morning Australian time.
The Indians have an extra’s days break before their next game, with the Delhi Capitals the next challenge.
