Beaumont brilliant but Aussies with momentum
DAY Three of the Women’s Ashes Test saw an English opener break a record, but the Aussies breakthrough with the momentum.
With two very set in batters at the crease to begin the day, the Aussies almost had the best start to the day possible when Darcie Brown appeared to trap Natalie Sciver-Brunt in front. But, after a successful review, the English star got a reprieve.
Sciver-Brunt would go on to make a half century at a pace that was especially quick for Test cricket, before eventually falling on 78 after being caught behind off the bowling of Ash Gardner.
But much like on day two it was Tammy Beaumont who was the star with bat in hand, proving rather tricky to dislodge from the crease. After later being supported by Danni Wyatt with her 44-run innings, Beaumont would go on to make a double century, and in turn score the highest test score by an Englishwoman, and the third highest Ashes test score.
With her still at the crease, the English were looking like they might go past Australia’s first innings total.
However thanks to the likes of Gardner and Tahlia McGrath finally powering through the tail end, England lost 4/15 to fall 10 runs short of Australia’s first innings total. Beaumont was in fact the last wicket to fall, finally being dismissed on 208 after becoming one of Gardner’s victims.
Gardner was the pick of the Australian bowlers, taking four wickets and picking up three maidens in her 25 over innings. McGrath also had a solid day with the ball, picking up three wickets and three maidens.
This left the Australians to get going on their second innings with the final 19 overs of the day, with Phoebe Litchfield (41 not out) and Beth Mooney (33 not out) safely guiding the Aussies to 0/82 at the end of the day.
