England survives nailbiter to get on the board
THE Women’s Ashes are still alive after England pulled off a remarkable win to secure its first points of the series.
Making 9/186 from 20 overs, England survived an absolute nailbiter to win by three runs.
Danni Wyatt was the star with the bat for the English, helping to navigate her side through a mid innings collapse of 5/19 to post 76 runs with the bat. No one else made close to that number of runs for England but ultimately it did not matter.
On the flipside it was Annabel Sutherland who starred with the ball for the tourists, taking three wickets from her four overs. Ash Gardner picked up two, while Darcie Brown, Ellyse Perry and Tahlia McGrath each picked up one.
That would not be Perry’s last influence on the game, as her efforts in the back end of the Australian batting innings kept the visitors in the match.
Already needing to pull off the biggest run chase in the team’s history, Alyssa Healy smashed five fours and two sixes to help get the Australians off to a strong start, finishing with 0/58 from their Powerplay.
However the Australians also suffered a mid innings batting collapse, losing 5/37 to heading towards suffering a rare T20 loss.
Perry and her 51 run performance helped pushed the chase into the final over and the Aussies ultimately needed 20 runs from that over, but could only manage 16.
The English wicket taking efforts were really spread out, with only one bowler not picking up a dismissal. Sarah Glenn and Sophie Ecclestone picked up two each, while Lauren Bell, Charlie Dean and Danielle Gibson each pick up one.
This win gives England its first points in the multi format Ashes series, but still need to win every match for the rest of the series in order to ultimately win the series, while Australia still only needs one more win to retain the trophy.
The series now moves to Lords for the next T20, happening on Sunday morning Australian time.
