Rain ultimately kills the fun in Melbourne
RAIN ultimately proved to be the killer factor in the second One Day International between Australia and the West Indies, with the match ultimately abandoned after only 25 and a half overs.
The Australians were in a strong position and had the West Indies reeling at 8/107, but another rain delay thwarted any push to an outright win.
After a morning rain delay initially restricted the match to just 29 overs per side, there truly was action from the first ball as Megan Schutt thought she had caught a nick off the returning Hayley Matthews.
Despite missing the last match it did not take long for Matthews to find her groove, gracefully hitting her first boundary in the second over straight over mid on. She then really started to pick up the pace in the fifth over, and she and Rashada Williams were starting to look pretty comfortable at the crease.
However, just as Matthews was truly starting to find her groove, Kim Garth struck and clean bowled the dangerous West Indian skipper.
Alana King then removed the also dangerous Stafanie Taylor the very next over, and the West Indies’ two biggest weapons with the bat were back in the shed.
However, Williams and Shemaine Campbelle were on a mission to prove they could be just as dangerous as their more well known teammates, keeping the scoreboard ticking over at a pace that was starting to get a bit high from an Australian perspective.
Campbelle’s quick fire innings came to an abrupt end soon after though when she was trapped In front by King.
Birthday girl Annabel Sutherland also got to join in on the wicket taking fun, dismissing Chinelle Henry an over later and helping to swing things back in the Australian’s favour.
Sutherland made it two wickets in as many overs when she helped Williams sky one to mid off, and all of a sudden things were starting to stall for the visitors.
King added a third to her wicket tally with another successful LBW trapping, and now the West Indies were truly into the tail end.
Sutherland continued the onslaught a few overs later, adding a third to her tally and now the question was would the West Indies survive the full innings.
Ash Gardner also did not take long to make an impact with ball in hand, picking up the wicket of Cherry-Ann Fraser with the very first ball she bowled.
Aaliyah Alleyene and Karishma Ramharack tried to muster a bit of a late innings resistance, putting together a handy partnership at the end of the innings, but just as they really started to get going the rain return ed and play was delayed yet again.
The second rain delay ultimately proved to be the killer one, with the teams ultimately shaking hands and the match abandoned after that.
