Big scores, big moments as Heat and Thunder win
THE first Sunday of WBBL saw plenty of big scores and memorable moments as Brisbane and the Sydney Thunder both won.
High scoring Harris helps Brisbane scorch Perth
The Brisbane Heat got their campaign off to a stellar start, defeating the Perth Scorchers by 50 runs.
After the Heat posted a massive 7/229 off their 20 overs, the Scorchers could only manage 8/179 from theirs.
The Heat’s massive score was underpinned by a particularly big hitting display from Grace Harris, who broke the record for highest score in the history of the WBBL. Her innings of 136 not out included 12 fours and 11s, with one particular six going viral for being struck as her bat snapped in half mid shot.
The Heat also had some impressive performances with the ball, with Courtney Sippel picking up four wickets and Jess Jonassen picking up two.
Meanwhile for the Scorchers an impressive 60 from Beth Mooney was not enough as no one else could match her level.
Amy Edgar also had a stellar spell with the ball, taking three wickets, while Chloe Ainsworth took two wickets.
Sri Lankans strikes Thunder to Sydney Smash win
Sydney Thunder have picked up a big win to start their WBBL09 by defeating crosstown rivals in the Sixers.
After the Thunder posted 5/190 from their 20 overs, the Sixers kept losing two many wickets and could only manage 9/148 from theirs.
The Thunder’s big score was backboned by Phoebe Litchfield (54 not out) and Chamari Athapaththu (52 not out). That was not the end of Athapaththu’s influence on the game, with the Sri Lankan captain also picking up three wickets with the ball. Heather Knight also picked up three wickets, while Sammy-Jo Johnson picked up two wickets.
Meanwhile for the Sixers no one really got much of a start with the bat as the top scorer was Ellyse Perry with 31. Earlier Jess Kerr and Lauren Cheatle both picked up two wickets each.
