Warm homecoming for Perth as Scorchers tame Hurricanes

IT was a triumphant homecoming for the Perth Scorchers last night, who picked up their second win of the WBBL09 season with a seven-wicket victory over the Hobart Hurricanes.

The Hurricanes batted first and were bowled out for 158 on the final ball of their innings, before the Scorchers were able to reach the target with nine balls to spare.

Hobart made an okay start to its innings, but kept losing wickets far too regularly, and as such struggled to get partnerships and momentum going. The biggest partnership of the innings did not come until the 84 run seventh wicket partnership between Naomi Stalenberg and Hayley Silver-Holmes.

Ultimately it was Stalenberg who top scored for the Hurricanes with 54, while Silver-Holmes made 25 and at the top of the order Elyse Villani made 39. Meanwhile for the Scorchers Chloe Ainsworth picked up thee wickets, while Alana King and Amy Edgar both picked up two wickets each.

In the chase the Scorchers got off to a much better start than the Hurricanes did, putting 68 runs on the board in eight overs for the opening partnership.

This was a real springboard for the Scorchers to push forward to reach the tally. They went on to lose a few wickets on the way, but thanks to that early work it proved to be a mere bump in the road.

Beth Mooney led the way for the Scorchers with the bat, making 52. She was ably assisted with a 45 not out from Maddy Darke.

Meanwhile for the Hurricanes Molly Strano, Shabnim Ismail and Heather Graham each picked up a wicket.

The Scorchers are now on the move again, heading to Melbourne for their next game on the weekend. The Hurricanes are also on the move, heading to Adelaide for their next game which is tomorrow.
