Sydney Thunders to big win over Renegades

SYDNEY Thunder remains undefeated this WBBL season after an eight wicket win over the Melbourne Renegades.

The Renegades made 5/147 from their 20 overs, before the Thunder reached the target halfway through their 18th over.

The start to the Renegades innings really was a sign of how the rest of the 20 overs was going to go when they lost their first wicket at the end of the third over with only 12 runs on the board.

They did not really recover until the second half of their innings, when Courtney Webb and Georgia Wareham put on a 78 run, almost 10 overs long partnership for the fifth wicket.

It was Wareham who went on to top score for the Renegades, making 47 not out, while Webb finished with 31.

Meanwhile for the Thunder the wicket taking duties were shared, with no one picking up more than one wicket. The bowlers who did pick up wickets were Hannah Darlington, Chamari Athapaththu, club debutant Marizanne Kapp and league debutant Ebony Hoskin.

Much like their opponents, the start of the Thunder innings really dictated how the rest of the innings progressed. Openers Athapaththu and Tahlia Wilson put on a 99-run first wicket partnership to really lay down a solid foundation for the winnings. Athapaththu would go on to top score for the Thunder, making 80.

There was a little but of a wobble where they lost another wicket only a few overs later, but it ultimately did not matter as Phoebe Litchfield and Heather Knight got the job done. The Thunder’s task was made quite a bit easier with some poor bowling from the Renegades, with the Melbournians conceding 12 extras, including five wides.

Meanwhile for the Renegades, Wareham was the only bowler to pick up a wicket.
