Sixers finally on the board in WBBL09

AFTER a slow start to the season, the Sydney Sixers are finally on the board this WBBL season after a six-run win over the Melbourne Renegades yesterday.

The Sixers batted first yesterday and made 7/164 from their 20 overs.

After a bad start to their innings, they recovered with a 68-run second wicket partnership. Although they could not repeat a partnership of that size for the rest of the innings it ultimately did not matter.

Sydney’s score was propelled by a 50 from skipper Ellyse Perry, which was later followed with a 41 from Chloe Tryon.

Meanwhile for the Renegades skipper Hayley Matthews led the way with the ball with three wickets to her name, while Georgia Wareham picked up two wickets and Ella Hayward and Sarah Coyte each picked up one.

The Renegades made a much better start to their batting innings than the Sixers had with theirs, making a 59 run opening partnership before Matthews fell two thirds of the way through the seventh over.

However, they lost their second wicket two balls later and the wheels really started to fly off for the home side.

Although they ultimately survived the whole innings without being bowled out, the Renegades just kept losing wickets too regularly and momentum in the process. In the end they only made 9/158 from their 20 overs.

Tammy Beaumont top scored for the Renegades with 43, while Wareham made 30 as the only other batter who got any sort of decent start.

On the flipside three bowlers all too multiple wickets, with Lauren Cheatle, Ash Gardner and Maitlin Brown each picking up two wickets. Erin Burns also picked up a wicket.

Both teams have a few days break now before their next game. The Sixers are off to Perth to face the Scorchers on Tuesday, while the Renegades are hosting the Thunder on Wednesday.
