Lee lights up Launceston to set up Hurricane win
THE Hobart Hurricanes picked up their second win of WBBL09 last night and in defeating the Sydney Thunder by 24 runs handed the Thunder their first loss of the season.
Hobart batted first and made 3/174 from its 20 overs, before the Thunder could only manage 6/150 from theirs.
Hurricanes openers Elyse Villani and Lizelle Lee got the Hurricanes off to a stellar star, making 68 runs without loss.
Lee also helped the Hurricanes accelerate again at the back end of the innings, combining with Heather Graham to put together a 78 run third wicket partnership.
Lee almost batted the entire innings, but was dismissed on the penultimate ball of the innings on 91. Villani was also prolific with bat in hand, making 40.
On the flipside the Thunder did not have anyone take multiple wickets, with Marizanne Kapp, Sam Batesand Ebony Hoskin each taking one wicket.
In the chase the Thunder made an okay start, but when they lose two wickets for only eight runs in the space of two overs, things started to look precarious for the visitors.
That proved to be costly, as they ultimately ran out of overs to chase down the target.
Phoebe Litchfield tried her hardest to provide some sort of spark for the Thunder, but her 68 was by far the best effort with the bat from the Thunder. The next highest tally was Anika Learoyd’s 20, with many of the other batters making scores in the teens.
Meanwhile for the Hurricanes Molly Strano led the way with ball in hand, picking up two wickets. Nicola Carey and Amy Smith also each picked up a wicket.
Hobart does not have to wait long to play again, with the Hurricanes slated to play the Stars on Thursday night.
The Thunder have to wait even less time before they get a chance to get back on the winners list. They are set to play the Renegades tomorrow.
