The Lay of the Land – WNCL 2023/24 Part 2

AFTER a two month break for WBBL09, the 2023/24 WNCL season returns this hour, so in case you forgot where things stand, here is a quick reminder of how every team is going.

1st – Queensland (3 wins, 1 loss)

The Fire have had an excellent start to the season, with only the one loss to NSW so far this season.

Their leading run scorer so far this season is Georgia Redmayne, who is only the sixth highest runs scorer in the season thus far.

Meanwhile the pick of their bowlers thus far have been a pair of young stars, with Courtney Sippel (first) and Grace Parsons (fifth) both in the top five leading wicket takers of the competition.

2nd – South Australia (3 wins, 1 loss)

Two time reigning runners ups South Australia is placed up the top of the ladder again, with one loss to its westerly neighbours the only blemish so far this season.

The Scorpions have two of the top five highest runs scorers this season – Courtney Webb and Bridget Patterson.

They also have two of the top five highest wicket takers so far this season – Kate Peterson and Jemma Barsby.

3rd – Western Australia (3 wins, 1 loss)

After only recording four wins in 2022/23, WA has almost reached that mark with 10 matches still to go this season.

Chloe Piparo is leading the way for most runs of the entire competition so far, with a lead of nine runs on her nearest opponent.

Meanwhile Piepa Cleary has been the pick of the West Australian bowlers so far this season.

4th – Tasmania (2 wins, 0 losses)

The Tasmanians cannot complain about the start to their season. They only have two wins on the board but they have only played the two games so they are undefeated and have games in hand.

Nicola Carey has been the leading run scorer for the Tasmanians so far this season, while Molly Strano has been the pick of the Tasmanian bowlers so far this season.

5th – New South Wales (1 win, 1 loss)

NSW finds itself in an unusual position compared to recent seasons down near the foot of the ladder, but they do have two games in hand over most of the competition.

Ash Gardner has been the pick of the batters, but she is the 22nd highest run scorer in the competition so far this season.

Meanwhile it is veteran Erin Burns who is the leading the wicket taker for the Breakers at this point in the season.

6th – Victoria (0 wins, 4 losses)

In a sight no longer unfamiliar to those in navy blue, Victoria has had a tough start to the year and is yet to get a win on the board this season.

Meg Lanning is by far the pick of the Victorian bowlers so far this season, but she is the only one to have scored more than 100 runs for them so far this season.

Meanwhile in a sign of the future it is Milly Illingworth who has been the pick of the Victorian bowlers so far this season.

7th – ACT (0 wins, 4 losses)

ACT is also in just about the same position as its southern neighbours, and is another young side finding the going tough so far this season.

The team’s leading run scorer Katie Mack is in the top 10 runs scorers in the league so far this season, but she is the only one to have scored more than 100 runs for them so far this season.

Meanwhile Holly Ferling and Jannatul Ferdus lead the way for the Meteors in the bowling department.
