Aussies accelerate to record successful chase

AUSTRALIA has pulled off a massive fightback win against India, defeating the hosts by six wickets in the first One Day International between the two women’s sides overnight.

After India made the very competitive 8/282 from its 50 overs, some of Australia’s biggest names helped get them over the line to record the second highest successful chase in women’s ODI history.

India made an okay start to its batting innings, but it was not until the back end of the innings where things really lifted to another level.

Jemimah Rodrigues and Pooja Vastrakar were the stars, putting on a 68-run eighth wicket partnership to give the innings another boost.

The Mumbai heat was visibly taking its toll on Rodrigues, but she batted superbly, finishing on 82 after skying one to long on. She was ably assisted by Vastrakar, who smashed 62 not out batting at number nine, in an innings which included seven fours and two sixes.

Meanwhile for the Australians it was the spinners who were again the pick of the bowlers, with Ash Gardner and Georgia Wareham both picking up two wickets each.

In reply the Australian batting innings could not have got off to a much worse start, with Alyssa Healy dismissed after three balls thanks to a superb catch in the slips from Sneh Rana. The catch ultimately gave Rana more than she bargained for though, with the catch causing her an injury that briefly forced her form the field.

But then Ellyse Perry and Phoebe Litchfield got to work, putting on a 148 run partnership to steer things back on track for the Australians.

Tahlia McGrath and Beth Mooney then completed the job with an 88 run fourth wicket partnership which left McGrath and Gardner not too much left to do to get the job done.

It was Litchfield who top scored for the Australians, with her 78 making her become the second Australian women to score 400 runs in a calendar year before her 21st birthday. Perry made 75 while McGrath finished on 68 not out.

Meanwhile for India it was only single wicket takers, with Vastrakar, Rana, Deepti Sharma and Renuka Singh Thakur all picking up wickets.
