Australia claims series after nail-biter
AUSTRALIA has pulled off a thrilling three-run win over India to claim the ODI portion of the multi-format series. After Australia made 8/258, the result went down to the wire but the Indians fell agonisingly short.
Much like in the first ODI, it was Ellyse Perry and Phoebe Litchfield who really got the run rate going for the Australians, putting on a 67-run partnership for the second wicket.
After Perry fell though, there was a wobbly patch for the Australians with the wickets coming fairly regularly. They found themselves at 6/180 heading to the last 10 and a half overs and things were not looking so good.
Enter Alana King, who proved there was some life in the Australian tail after all. She stuck around, combining with the likes of Georgia Wareham and Annabel Sutherland to give the innings one last boost. Earlier it was Litchfield who had top-scored with 63, while Perry made 50.
On the flipside, Deepti Sharma starred with the ball for India, picking up five wickets and proving particularly destructive at the back end of the Australian innings. After a solid enough start to their innings, India did not really start to accelerate until the third wicket, when Jemimah Rodrigues and Richa Ghosh put on an 88 run partnership.
But much like the Australians, India also suffered through a mid-innings collapse. When India lost its eighth wicket at the end of the penultimate over, they needed 16 runs off one over, which is not an easy task at the best of times.
Enter Sharma and Shreyanka Patil, who certainly gave it a solid go and got 12 of the runs but it was not enough. Earlier it was Ghosh who had top scored with 96, while Rodrigues made 44.
Meanwhile for the Australians, Sutherland starred with three wickets, while fellow Victorian Wareham picked up two wickets.
