History made as the Meteors get on the board

THE ACT Meteors are on the board for WNCL season 2023/24, after they pulled off a historic upset win against NSW yesterday.

The four-wicket win over the Breakers not only got them their first win of this season, but it was also their first win over their neighbours since 2009/10, which was the first season the Meteors were in the competition.

Yesterday NSW was bowled out for 243, before the Meteors then reached the target with just under four overs to spare.

NSW made a pretty productive start to its innings, before a few lean overs saw some wickets fall pretty cheaply. Things did then turn around with a 77-run fifth wicket partnership, but unfortunately after that the cheap wickets returned.

It was Claire Moore who was the pick of the NSW batters with 61 at the top of the order, while later in the innings Hannah Darlington and Erin Burns made 42 and 40 respectively.

Meanwhile for the Meteors the wicket taking duties were shared evenly, with Carly Leeson picking up three of them, while Holly Ferling, Grace Dignam and Annie Wikman picked up two each.

In reply the Meteors could not have gotten off to much of a worse start, losing their first wicket on the fifth ball of the innings with only one run on the board.

It was not until the third wicket that things really started to move in the right direction for the Meteors, where Katie Mack and Alisha Bates combined for a 122-run stand in the space of only 20 overs. Mack went on to make 74 runs, while Bates made 66 runs.

That put the game right in the Meteors’ hands, but a few lean partnerships post the third wicket spiced things up again. However, the speed with which Mack and Bates had batted ensured the Meteors had plenty of time to reach the target.

Lauren Cheatle had a really strong spell for the Meteors with ball in hand, taking 3/18 from her 9.1 overs, which included three maidens. Jade Allen also picked up two wickets.
