Australia’s next gen storms to series sweep
AUSTRALIA’S next generation of white ball stars ran riot as their side secured an ODI series sweep against the West Indies in Canberra yesterday. The tourists were skittled for just 86 after being sent in to bat, before Australia hunted down the miserly total in just 41 deliveries.
It was the hosts’ shortest run chase in ODI history – no surprise given the Windies mustered the lowest-ever One-Day score at Manuka Oval. Openers Jake Fraser-McGurk (41 off 18) and Josh Inglis (35 off 16) ensured the match was wrapped up before 6pm with dynamic displays of hitting.
Bowling first, the Aussies recalled Lance Morris and Xavier Bartlett, who both debuted in Melbourne’s series opener. The former broke through for his first international wicket en route to figures of 2-13, before cruelly having his match cut short mid-spell with a side strain.
In a shuffle to the setup, Cameron Green opened the bowling alongside Bartlett, who was adjudged both player of the match and series for his 4-21. The Queenslander took the opening wicket via a LBW call which Kjorn Ottley seemed to get an inside edge to, but there was no denying his remaining dismissals.
Ottley’s fellow opener, Alick Athanaze proved the relative mainstay in a batting effort which yielded eight single-digit scores. The 25-year-old posted 32 off 60 deliveries, while his 27-run partnership with Roston Chase (12) was the largest of the innings.
A calamitous runout which spelled the end for Matthew Forde, who was burned by Chase before slipping to the Canberran turf, embodied the Windies’ late-innings collapse of 6-15. On the flipside, it was a brutally clinical bowling effort from Australia to set up a straightforward victory.
Having drawn 1-1 in the Test series before Australia’s thumping 3-0 response in the ODIs, the two sides will move on to a three-game T20 series. The shorter format matches get underway on Friday in Hobart ahead of games in Adelaide and Perth.
