Carey crushes Queensland to set up Tiger dynasty
TASMANIA has cemented its WNCL dynasty after defeating Queensland by six wickets to win its third title in a row yesterday. After Queensland posted 7/248, the Tigers then reached the target with just over two overs to spare.
Queensland made a pretty good start to its innings with a 59-run opening stance, but 26 balls later the Fire lost their second wicket and had only added seven extra runs. That was followed by a 56-run partnership and a 41-run one, then later a 48-run one to push the tally up to what it ultimately was.
Charli Knott was the star for the Fire, with her 73 from 61 balls the true backbone of the innings in the middle order. Without her the Fire may have been in a lot more trouble, with the next highest scores being Georgia Voll and Mikayla Hinkley’s 33s.
Meanwhile for the Tasmanians, Heather Graham was the pick of the bowlers with three wickets to her name, while Sasha Moloney, Nicola Carey and Lauren Smith each picked up one wicket.
Tasmania got its innings off to a bit of a disastrous start, losing their first wicket in the second over for only eight runs, but then recovered a bit to put a 42-run partnership on the board.
The momentum really started to swing in their favour though with a 132-run third wicket partnership between Carey and Graham, but then they lost another four wicket three balls later for no extra runs.
However, after Carey and Emma Manix-Geeves recovered the innings when they put on a 67 run partnership to get the Tigers over the line to be crowned champions once again.
Player of the Match Carey was the backbone of the innings with 111 not out, while Graham’s 63 was also a massive contribution to getting Tasmania its third straight title.
Voll was the pick of the bowlers for the Fire as she took three of the wickets that fell, while Nicola Hancock recorded the other one.
