Warriorz wipe through Indians to cause upset
THE UP Warriorz have caused what will perhaps be the upset of the WPL season, downing the Mumbai Indians by seven wickets.
The Indians posted 6/161 from their 20 overs, before the Warriorz reached the tally with three and a half overs to spare.
Mumbai started its innings with partnerships of 50 and 42, but after that the next highest partnership was 29 as the wickets started to tumble quite regularly, but the final total for the Indians was still very competitive thanks to the strong start.
The Warriorz also bowled very accurately – only conceding one extra – so really had to rely on those wickets to try and curtail the Indians.
The Indians’ two highest scorers were their openers, with Hayley Matthews smashing 10 boundaries on her way to 55, while Yastika Bhatia made 26.
Meanwhile for the Warriorz the wicket taking duties were shared very evenly, with Anjali Sarvani, Grace Harris, Sophie Ecclestone, Deepti Sharma and Rajeshwari Gayakwad all picking up a wicket each.
The Warriorz’ openers did not waste time getting to work on the total, with Alyssa Healy and Kiran Navgire going at about 10 runs an over on their way to a 94 run opening stance. Once that partnership was broken though things fell apart a little, with two wickets for four runs falling in the space of an over and a half.
However, once that chaotic period settled Harris and Sharma went on to get the job done, putting together a 65 run partnership to get the Warriorz over the line.
Navgire topped the runs tally for the Warriorz with 10 boundaries in an innings of 57, while Harris made a very quickfire 38 not out.
Meanwhile for the Indians Issy Wong was the pick of their bowlers with two wickets, while Amelia Kerr picked up the other wicket.
