Harris’ heroics helps Warriorz win again

The UP Warriorz picked up their second win of the Women’s Indian Premier League (WIPL) season after defeating the Gujarat Giants by six wickets overnight. Gujarat was restricted to 5/142, before UP reached the target in the 16th over.

Gujarat actually made a fast start to their innings, but as the wickets started to fall the partnerships also started to fall in size.

After a 40-run opening stance in just over five overs, the next partnership of any substance did not come until the 52-run fourth wicket partnership, and those two partnerships would be it.

Perhaps this is also more evident when the batting card for the Giants shows a lot of their batters got a start but did not go on with it. Phoebe Litchfield (35) and Ash Gardner (30) were the pick of the Giants’ batters.

Meanwhile for the Warriorz it was Sophie Ecclestone who starred with the ball, taking three wickets, while Rajeshwari Gayakwad chipped in with one wicket.

The Warriorz got off to an even quicker start with the bat than the Giants have, making a similar sized opening partnership in about half the time.

Although they then lost another wicket about an over later, this meant it was time for Grace Harris to head to the crease, and in typical Grace Harris fashion, once she got going she was hard to stop.

She smashed nine fours and two sixes to keep the run rate up for the Warriorz and ultimately get them over the line. Her innings ultimately ended at 60 not out off just 33 balls.

The Giants cannot even blame wayward bowling for the result because they only conceded two extras.

Tanuja Kanwar continued her strong start to the tournament with another two wickets to her name, while Meghana Singh and Kathryn Bryce picked up a wicket each.
