Unpredictable UP seals nail-biting win

THE UP Warriorz’s up and down Women’s Indian Premier League (WIPL) season has continued, but this time it was a positive after they downed the Delhi Capitals by a single run in a thriller overnight. The Warriorz made 8/138, before a strong bowling performance helped them escape with a win.

UP’s opening partnership was quick but short, but the runs then started to flow a bit better in the second wicket. However, that 46-run stand would ultimately become the biggest of the innings as the wickets started to fall at a pretty consistent rate.

Deepti Sharma was the pick of the batters with 59 off just 48 runs, while Alyssa Healy chipped in with a pretty quick 29 at the top of the order.

Meanwhile on Delhi’s bowling card, Radha Yadav and Titas Sadhu were the pick of the bunch, picking up two wickets each.

Delhi made an okay start to its innings, but it was the back end of it where things really fell apart. The Capitals were not going at a particularly fast rate, but with a low score to chase it was not alarm bells just yet. However, they then went from 4/112 early in the 18th over to all out for 137 on the penultimate ball of the innings.

The onslaught of wickets was brought on by some destructive bowling from Sharma and Grace Harris, and was assisted by some good fielding from Rajeshwari Gayakwad. Sharma was the star with the ball, picking up four scalps, while Harris picked up two wickets in the space of a spell that was only five balls long. Saima Thakor also picked up two wickets.

Unsurprisingly for Delhi most of their runs came early on in their innings, and also came from skipper Meg Lanning, who made a nice 60 off just 46 balls.
